A huge part of planning for gardening is sun, and the graphic below shows the sun for our front porch. Most of the houseplants I already have thrive in the morning and filtered light, so I use them to frame out the door, and have moved the other herbs/veggies towards full sunlight.
My goal is to keep this area attractive by the property management company's standards, and practical by mine. Our house sits at the top of the hill in our neighborhood, so everyone sees it, which makes it even more noticeable if it looks scrubby or if the plants look wild.
